Groundwork & Landscaping
From solid foundations beneath your feet to beautiful outdoor spaces above them — we handle both ends of the job.

What We Do
Built From the Ground Up. Finished to the Last Detail.
Good building starts below the surface. Whether we’re laying the foundations for a new extension, installing drainage to protect your property, or transforming your outdoor space into something you’ll actually want to spend time in — it all begins with getting the groundwork right.
At YBR, we carry out all the groundwork needed before and during a build, and we’re equally at home creating driveways, patios, and outdoor features that kerb appeal and function in equal measure. It’s the kind of work that’s easy to overlook — until it’s done badly.
Groundwork Services
Below the Surface
The groundwork is what everything else is built on. We make sure it’s done properly.

Foundations
Every solid structure starts with a solid foundation. We excavate and lay the foundations for new builds, extensions, outbuildings, and garden structures — ensuring the ground is properly prepared and the base is built to last. We assess the ground conditions, choose the right foundation type for the job, and carry out all the concrete work to the required standard.

Drainage Installation
Poor drainage causes serious problems over time — waterlogged gardens, flooded driveways, damp creeping into structures. We install drainage systems that manage surface water and groundwater properly, whether that’s as part of a new build project or as a standalone fix for an existing problem. This includes soakaways, channel drainage, and connecting into existing drainage runs.

Retaining Walls
If your garden or site has a significant slope, a retaining wall holds back soil and creates level, usable space. We design and build retaining walls that are structurally sound, properly drained behind, and built to last — whether in block, brick, or natural stone to suit the surroundings.

Above the Surface
Once the groundwork is done, we can transform your outdoor space into something worth coming home to.

Driveways & Paving
A well-laid driveway or path makes a real difference to how a property looks and functions. We design and install driveways and paved areas in a range of materials — block paving, tarmac, resin, and natural stone — with proper sub-base preparation and drainage built in from the start. No shortcuts, no settling, no puddles.

Patios & Decking
A good patio or deck turns your garden into an extension of your living space. We lay patios in natural stone, porcelain, and concrete paving, and build timber and composite decking to suit your garden and your budget. Everything is laid on a properly prepared base so it stays level and looks good for years, not just the first summer.

Fencing
The right fencing defines your boundary, adds privacy, and finishes off an outdoor space properly. We supply and install a range of fencing options — from close-board timber panels to post-and-rail and decorative styles — ensuring everything is set in solid posts and built to withstand the weather.
Frequently Asked Questions
Things People Often Ask Us
Do I need planning permission for a driveway or patio?
For most driveways and patios, planning permission isn’t required — but there are some exceptions. If your driveway uses a non-permeable surface (like solid concrete or tarmac) and is over 5 square metres, you may need permission, or you’ll need to ensure proper drainage is in place. We’ll advise you on what applies to your specific project before any work starts.
What’s the difference between block paving and resin driveways?
Block paving uses individual paving bricks laid on a compacted sub-base — it’s durable, repairable, and suits a wide range of properties. Resin driveways bond stone aggregate to an existing or new surface, giving a smooth, permeable finish that’s low-maintenance and smart-looking. Both are good options; the right choice depends on your budget, your property, and the look you’re after. We’re happy to talk through the options with you.
Can you sort drainage at the same time as laying a driveway or patio?
Yes — and we’d always recommend it. Getting drainage right during the initial groundwork is far easier and cheaper than fixing water problems after the fact. We include drainage as a standard part of our driveway and patio installs.
How long does groundwork or landscaping take?
A standard driveway or patio typically takes three to five days depending on size and complexity. Drainage work and foundations vary considerably based on the scope. We’ll give you a clear timescale as part of your quote so you know what to expect before we start.
Can you combine groundwork with a building project?
Absolutely — in fact, it often makes sense to do both together. If you’re having an extension built, for example, we can carry out all the groundwork as part of the same project, saving you time and the hassle of coordinating separate contractors.
